Burlap Flower Tutorial

We had so many emails about the burlap flowers from Tuesday’s Sweet Baby Shower feature from the ladies over at Spaceships and Laserbeams that I asked Stephanie to provide us an exclusive DIY tutorial.  They are incredibly easy, inexpensive and a great way to provide that vertical element.
Here’s her step by step account:
The materials needed are items practically anyone has access to: burlap, yarn, a thin black marker and pinking shears (you can use ordinary scissors if you don’t have pinking shears).
Using the marker, freehand draw five petal flowers of varying sizes on the burlap.  You’ll want to have flowers in three approximate sizes: small, medium and large.  You will need these three sizes for every burlap flower you make.  To create a free-flowing, handmade feel, vary the sizes of the flowers.

Use your pinking shears to cut inside the black lines.  Pinking shears are great because they will naturally fray the burlap and create a softer edge.  If you don’t have pinking shears, you can use regular scissors.
Three Tips for This Step:
1. Cutting burlap is not like cutting cotton fabric.  It is messy.
2. Don’t draw all of your flowers at once.  When you start assembling, you are going to want to make specific sizes or notice a flower you need to replace.
3. Your flowers aren’t going to all be perfect.  Don’t worry.  That’s what makes them charming.

Once your flowers are cut, make two small slits in the middle of each flower.

Stack one small, one medium and one large flower and thread a piece of yarn through the slits.

Tie a knot and trim the yarn to make a stamen. Scrunch each layer to create depth, otherwise the flowers will just lay flat.

To not damage the paint on your wall, stick the flowers up with green painters tape. Just make sure you use an appropriate amount for the weight of your flower and it’ll stay there for days. Enjoy!
